New Years Day Fun
New Years Day we headed to the lake property near Alexandria. We hadn't been up there since early fall and thought it would be fun to dust off the snow shoes and check a few mouse traps (the mice really like the camper this time of year).
Sarah slept most of the way up so we were able to make it to Alexandria in under 2 hours. It isn't unusual for it to take close to three when she is awake.
The weather was sunny and relatively warm when we left the house. It got a little overcast and a lot more windy when we got up there. as we approached the turn to get into our property, it became apparent that the wind had blown some drifts into the road. It also looked like the plow hadn't been down the road since the last storm. Not a problem had we decided to take the truck up there. Instead we took Bob (the Honda Civic Hybrid). We stopped and I got out to look things over while Andrea got Sarah bundled up for what looked like it was going to be a long hike down the road.
After walking the road for a hundred yards or so I decided that old Bob could probably make it. Worse case scenario was going to involve me pushing once or twice to get out of a drift or two. As I got behind the wheel and eased Bob past the first drift Sarah and Andrea cheered me on from the front seat. Sarah loves riding in the front when we get off the main roads up there. We made it in without incident and jumped out ready to do a little playing.
The snow was a little deeper than I had planed for. Once we got off the road, I wasn't able to pull Sarah in the sled. Instead she got piggy back rides while we snowshoed through waist high drifts. She loved it even though her cheeks and nose got bright red. We spent most of the time sitting in the camper with the heater on and sipped some hot cider while Sarah played with a bucket of snow we brought inside for her. She would play with it till her fingers had to have gone numb, cry a little, then go back for more. Even though the heater was on it was still a little chilly so we decided to call it a day and head back to the car. I emptied the mouse traps, set a few more and we headed out.
All in all it was a good day. I think Andrea and I both look forward to the upcoming years of being able to go up there and let Sarah sled on the hill or do a little ice fishing etc. She is still a little young for playing in the snow. She hasn't learned to leave her gloves on. I am guessing she will have it figured out by the end of this winter. Sorry we didnt get any pictures of this outing. We will on future outings.
